Embracing challenges to live a balanced, healthy life.

As someone who has made just about every mistake in the book and struggled with a little bit of everything, I understand the challenge of managing one’s health and while dealing with the difficulties of life. I believe that finding balance and success is about accepting what is (good or bad) and living the life you want to live regardless. I’ve struggled with the demands of school and work. I’ve struggled with the stress of finances. I’ve struggled with my health, weight, and confidence. I’ve struggled with anxiety inducing perfectionism and depression. However, those struggles encouraged me to figure out how to live by my values, overcome obstacles, and even live a healthier life. I’ve discovered that improving your physical and mental health isn’t about waiting for the right time to start, but about creating it. 

Health goals ignore the big picture.

The health and wellness space is filled with information. Gurus that have the perfect formula for success. Influencers that share their unrealistic routines yet promise quick results. Athletes and coaches even share valuable knowledge, but must do so very generally. 

Want more personalized help? There are coaches for fitness, nutrition, personal development, and therapists for your relationships and mental health. Any of these may be exactly what you need for a certain goal, but very few take into account the big picture. 

You may have prioritized aspects of your life, sacrificing others, in order to reach a certain goal. I know I have. But I found that turning my attention to one area often meant feeling like I was regressing in others. Caring about physical health shouldn’t come at the expense of mental health, responsibilities, or relationships.

Once I started basing my goals, actions, and success off my values, I found my capacity to better my health and life altogether improved dramatically. Start treating your goals and habits as behaviors that influence every part of your life rather than just one aspect, and you’ll find that positive change is amplified and enduring. 

Because life is so complex and interconnected, changing one habit, mindset, or behavior can impact many aspects of life. That’s something that most health coaches simply don’t consider, or at least don’t emphasize. Losing weight, gaining fitness, and feeling heathier require the strengths developed from other dimensions of life, and will likely positively impact every dimension of life as well. 

I can’t say that I have reached every goal I have or am perfect at practicing every healthy habit, but adopting a philosophy of holistic growth has set me up for a lifetime of progress that I find quite fulfilling.  Learn how to become holistic, mindful, reflective, and consistent, and you will find that you not only start reaching your goals, but start enjoying the process too.
